Program Manager, Transportation & Building Infrastructure

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) is a trade association an accredited Standards Development Organization (SDO) representing manufacturers of safe, reliable, and efficient electrical and medical imaging technologies. In an industry that is connected, digital, and rapidly evolving, NEMA supports its Members by developing industry Standards, advocating for government policies, and providing decision-grade business intelligence.

The Program Manager, Transportation and Building Infrastructure oversees national and international technical programs—including Standards and building code development—for several Sections within the Transportation Systems Division and Building Infrastructure Division. For example, these Divisions include transportation management and control systems, electric transportation systems, and electric infrastructure technologies installed in buildings. The ideal qualified candidate has technical/engineering skills and background in transportation, telecommunication, electronics, and/or digital/network systems.

The position reports to the Vice President of Operations and Strategy and is based in Arlington (Rosslyn), Virginia. The position includes up to 30 percent travel, both domestic and international. Part-time telework is available per NEMA policy. The incumbent will take on additional tasks as needed.

Key Responsibilities

Program Manager (PM) is a subject matter expert on transportation systems and building electrical infrastructure and expands existing NEMA technical capabilities in those areas

I.  Plan and execute technical programs related to assigned products

  • Develop technical strategies and project plans; identify and execute opportunities to write new Standards, technical reports and articles.
  • Develop multi-year work plans and budgets aligned with Division/Section strategic plan(s); track progress and expenses, deliver technical work on-time/budget
  • Plan logistical arrangements, manage meetings, prepare meeting minutes and distribute associated documents

II. Lead development of new technical Standards and modifications to building codes to promote Members' products and systems

  • Identify, initiate, and complete new technical work products
  • Ensure compliance with technical procedures related to codes and Standards development, harmonization, revision, and reaffirmation (e.g., NEMA, ANSI, IEC, CANENA, National Electrical Code?)
  • Oversee Standards harmonization among the United States, Canada, and Mexico through CANENA (Council for Harmonization of Electrotechnical Standards of the Nations in the Americas)
  • Manage work of U.S. National Committee Technical Advisory Groups to influence International Electrotechnical Committee (IEC) Standards, including adoption of North American Standards in-whole or in-part
  • Serve as Secretary for various Standards development committees

III. Build/maintain personal relationships with NEMA Members, internal and external committees and organizations, and key participants in Standards development process

  • Work effectively with Members to complete technical projects
  • Develop and maintain relationships with technical organizations and Standards developing organizations with which NEMA works on regular basis
  • Proactively communicate membership value proposition and encourage participation in technical activities to retain existing Members
  • Assist in identifying prospects and recruiting new Members

Experience and Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or similar discipline required; advanced degree a plus
  • Five or more years of full-time experience in related field(s); experience in manufacturing, maintenance, installation, testing of related electrical/electronic products or comparable military experience a plus
  • AStd or CStd Standards professional certification a differentiator
  • Familiarity with Standards development procedures (e.g., ANSI, IEC) and code development (e.g., National Electrical Code)
  • Knowledge of existing and emerging transportation and building technologies
  • Project management, time management, and budgeting skills; ability to execute multiple projects against demanding timelines
  • Ability to quickly, fairly, and diplomatically resolve conflicts and solve problems
  • Ability to clearly and persuasively write, speak and represent technical matters and exhibit executive presence in all settings
  • Motivated to seek new challenges with a creative and learning mindset
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; experience using online collaboration and communication software (e.g., SharePoint, Teams)

Concierge — NEMA Conference Center

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) develops performance and other Standards for its Members in the electrical and medical imaging industries. NEMA crafts and executes advocacy campaigns and provides analytical products to assist Member companies with business decisions.

The Concierge will provide exceptional services and proactively anticipate the needs of NEMA guests. The position serves as a direct liaison between guests and NEMA leadership and shall maintain a professional decorum and facilitate an efficient yet welcoming environment within the NEMA Conference Center. The position coordinates scheduling and will also provide administrative assistance to a defined number of senior NEMA staff.

The Concierge position is a non-exempt position reporting directly to the Manager – Office Services, and is located at NEMA headquarters in Rosslyn, VA; after-work hours are required on a previously identified basis. 

Key Responsibilities:

I. Conference Center Operations

  • Manage all aspects of Conference Center including day-to-day scheduling coordination, meeting set-up/wrap-up, and oversight of catering services
  • Configure meeting space to specifications of the meeting requester including proactively replenishing consumables throughout meeting
  • Serve as courteous liaison between guests and NEMA management and staff  to ensure a professionally managed guest experience, such as by welcoming all visitors formally, whether in-person or by phone, and arranging transportation
  • Anticipate guests' needs and service all requests, resolving issues or notifying Manager – Office Services or other responsible staff
  • Maintain a  personal professional demeanor and orderly work environment

II. Conference Center Maintenance and Upkeep

  • Restock meeting supplies, manage beverage inventory, oversee building cleaning service to ensure high quality
  • Maintain the appearance and working order of conference room A/V and other equipment ensuring ready for use for all events
  • Ensure frequently used meeting reference documents are readily available for NEMA staff and guests

III. Provide Administrative Support to Assigned Staff

  • Manage hotel identification and contracting process for all off-site meetings in coordination with third-party hotel site procurement and selection firm
  • Provide administrative support for Operations Department and Communications and Brand Management Department as needed
  • Serve as back-up for identified administrative or other staff as required

Experience and Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma required; Associate Degree or higher a plus
  • Front Desk, Concierge, customer service or other hospitality experience preferred
  • Some experience providing administrative support, internship, receptionist, or related experience
  • Experience with planning and managing calendars and inventories
  • Perform independently with minimal supervision and demonstrate an aptitude to solve problems thoroughly within NEMA policy
  • Project an approachable and professional image in personal appearance, manner, and demeanor
  • Ability to multi-task and to perform well under pressure
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, speak articulately, and use phone; possess capability to lift up to 50 pounds and move furniture; be able to use close and distance vision

Web Applications Developer

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) develops performance and other Standards for its Members in the electrical and medical imaging industries. NEMA crafts and executes advocacy campaigns and provides analytical products to assist Member companies with business decisions.

The Web Applications Developer provides application development, project management, and support for NEMA websites. The position reports directly to the Manager of Information Systems. The position will work at Rosslyn, VA.

Key Responsibilities

I.  Design, develop, test, implement, and maintain web-based Intranet applications

  • Define requirements for new web applications
  • Implement using SharePoint (currently SharePoint 2013, moving to SharePoint Online in 2020)
  • Maintain and update applications that track tasks, travel, contract status and approval, and staff regulatory activity
  • Provide staff support

II. Maintain NEMA websites and develop new features

  • Monitor website uptime
  • Define requirements for new web applications
  • Develop features using Sitefinity Web Content Management System, asp.net MVC, and C#
  • Work with Communications Department to support NEMA website strategy

III. Design, implement, and monitor website security measures to include hardening, software updates, and vulnerability scanning

IV. Keep current with the latest Web applications and programming practices through education, study, and participation in conferences, workshops, and online training.

V.  Provide website related user support

Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree plus relevant professional training
  • Two or more years work experience in software or website applications development
  • Proficient in web technologies such as HTML, CSS, Javascript, and programming. Prefer experience in Visual Studios, C#, asp.net, SharePoint, and Sitefinity.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks against tight timelines
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills especially in the areas of website development
  • Eager to take on new challenges, evince a positive attitude and possess an open mind
  • Ability to write and speak effectively especially to non-technical individuals
