Strategic Initiatives

The NEMA Strategic Initiatives Program was established to seize emerging market opportunities and solve impending challenges facing multiple NEMA product sections and divisions. On an annual basis, the NEMA Board of Governors approves a new suite of Strategic Initiatives. Participation in NEMA Strategic Initiatives is open to all NEMA Members. Contact Patrick Hughes to find our more or to get involved.

2020 Strategic Initiatives

Digitalization and the Internet of Things

  • NEMA.Lab Technology Idea Exchange
To establish a cross-domain, technology-based knowledge development, capture, and sharing forum. Quarterly meetings will be convened to discuss reports on the future of wireless communication (5G), artificial intelligence, digital twin, and responsible materials sourcing.
  • IoT Case Studies and Promotion
To provide NEMA Members with a repository of quantifiable, monetized value of IoT products/systems and perspectives from end-users that can be used in product design and marketing.
  • Standby Power Regulation
To develop industry guidance for regulators about the standby power requirements of connected devices that offer edge computing, cybersecurity protection, monitoring, and other always-on functionality.
  • Electronics Scope Expansion
To conduct an analysis and pursue opportunities to diversify the scope of NEMA by adding new electronic technologies.

Market Development

  • International Standards Efficacy Campaign
To support NEMA Sections in defining and effectively executing their individualized strategies vis-à-vis international Standards, regardless of whether Sections choose a domestic, regional, or international approach.
  • Code Adoption Research and Cost/Benefit Methodology
To develop two resources for states to use to justify adopting the most recent version of model building codes—a methodology for assessing the costs and benefits of adopting the most recent I-codes, and research into the motivations of policymakers and advocates for and against code adoption to help NEMA tailor its advocacy messaging.
  • Building Rating and Labeling Feasibility Study
To promote the adoption of above-code energy-efficient, safe, reliable, and sustainable electric products by improving existing building labels, ratings, and certifications.

Medical Imaging

  • Cybersecurity
To identify legislative and regulatory policies that would promote cybersecurity protection of medical imaging equipment, and to convene a stakeholder group (inclusive of larger hospital systems) to advocate for mutual policy objectives.

Resilience

  • Resilience Toolkit
To develop and promote guides for communities to use to assess electrical resilience gaps, and to build awareness of the importance of electrical resilience upgrades amongst local decision-makers.

Workforce Development

  • Industry Promotion Toolkit
To promote the use of the NEMA digital workforce development toolkit (including video content and online distribution platform) that will help Members promote the benefits of a career in electromanufacturing to middle school and high school students. Visit www.digitalNEMAacademy.org for more.
  • Pre-Apprenticeship Program
To assist Members in establishing a pre-apprenticeship program in collaboration with their local high schools. NEMA will provide training on how to implement a program, as well as best practices for company apprenticeship programs. Visit www.NEMAacademy.org for more.
